Only the power of the Holy Spirit can change our heart toward sin and
see that there is a God whom we have sinned against. We are powerless to save
ourselves or to save anyone else.
To meditate/pray upon
John 16:8-11 “When he comes,
he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment:
about sin, because people do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where
you can see me no longer; and about judgment, because the prince of this world
now stands condemned”.
Romans 3:23 ‘For all have sinned and fall short
of the glory of God.’
Romans 7:14-15 ‘We know that the law is spiritual;
but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin. I do not understand what I do’.
It’s extremely rare that anyone ever wins an
argument. If you’ve ever watched a something like the political discussion
program Question Time, you will never see anyone change their views, ever! A
change of heart is equally difficult; a change of heart is to turn from a way
of thinking or behaviour with the mind and the will – it results in a changed
life.
Only the power of the Holy Spirit can change
our heart toward sin. Sin is to miss the mark – to miss the perfection of God’s
standards.
Before one comes to Christ we may not believe
in ‘sin’; sin seems irrelevant, an out-dated concept. Indeed we love to do the
things that are sin and we certainly want to govern our own lives, which at the
heart of sin – we usurp God from the throne of our hearts.
Only the Holy Spirit can convict us that
there is a God, that we have sinned against Him, and that we need His
forgiveness.
Leon Morris has written, ‘The Spirit brings the world’s sin home to
itself. The Spirit convicts the individual sinner’s conscience. Otherwise
people would never come to see themselves as sinners.’
