Devotional 14/10/16 – John 16:14 The purpose of the Son’s speaking

20:16 Posted by Matthew Beaney No comments

Jesus directs the Holy Spirit to bring Him glory! If Jesus were less than God, this purpose would be blasphemy!
To meditate/pray upon
John 16:14 “He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you”.
Revelation 5:12 ‘In a loud voice they were saying: “Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!”’
Notice the way that it is the Son who speaks and directs the Spirit to bring Him glory.
John Piper wrote on the rightness of God’s self-glorifying passion,
‘Is not the essence of righteousness to place supreme value on what is supremely valuable, with all the just actions that follow? And isn’t the opposite of righteousness to set our highest affections on things of little or no worth, with all the unjust actions that follow? Thus the righteousness of God is the infinite zeal and joy and pleasure that he has in what is supremely valuable, namely, his own perfection and worth. And if he were ever to act contrary to this eternal passion for his own perfections he would be unrighteous, he would be an idolater’
There is no coyness in the Son’s self-glorifying purpose. Only one whose identity is God should have the desire for worship! Let’s have concord of purpose with the Father, Spirit and Son in making Jesus our first love and seeking to bring Him glory; indeed there is no greater aim that could please the Spirit more! Jonathan Edwards wrote,
‘The enjoyment of God is the only happiness with which our souls can be satisfied. To go to heaven, fully to enjoy God, is infinitely better than the most pleasant accommodations here. These are but shadows; but God is the substance. These are but scattered beams; but God is the sun. These are but streams; but God is the ocean.’
