Devotional 18/10/16 – John 16:17-18 “We don’t understand”

21:53 Posted by Matthew Beaney No comments

The disciples, like many of us, took a long time to understand Jesus and His mission. They give ordinary people like you and me great hope. If God could use these people for God’s great purposes, He can use anyone!
To meditate/pray upon
John 16:17-18 ‘At this, some of his disciples said to one another, “What does he mean by saying, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,’ and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?”  They kept asking, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We don’t understand what he is saying.”’
Isaiah 53:10-11 ‘Yet it was the Lord’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the Lord makes his life an offering for sin, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand. After he has suffered, he will see the light of life and be satisfied; by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many, and he will bear their iniquities.’
John 12:16 ‘At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that these things had been done to him’.
The disciples could not grasp the meaning of Jesus’ words. They could not see why He would say you will “see me know more… then you will see me”. They could not envisage any reason for Jesus to die, and they certainly would not have had any ideas of a resurrection.
The Old Testament prophecies that there would come a Messiah who would die and rise from death, but the disciples, and the Jews in general, were not able to grasp these things.
The things of God and the cross seem foolish until we experience the new birth by the Holy Spirit. Now we understand!
