Joy is ‘the emotion of faith’ let’s learn from Jesus how to have
fullness of joy.
To meditate/pray upon
John 17:13 “I am coming to you now, but I say these things while
I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy
within them.”
‘Psalm 19:8 ‘The
precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the
LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes.’
Jesus says, “I say these things
that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves”. ‘These things’ refers
to all that He has said in the upper room beginning in chapter 13.
In summary we could say that, fullness
of joy comes from trusting in the present Saviour and serving His people no
matter what and we come to trust by listening to what He says in His word.
I define joy as ‘the emotion of faith’
It’s an emotion – it is feelings, thoughts, impulses and bodily
sensations. But it’s an emotion that is shaped by our faith in Spirit inspired
truth.
John Piper wrote,
‘The Bible is no trifle, it is
your life – the kindling of your joy’
Fullness
of joy is available to us. Jesus has revealed His great love and grace. Let’s
give ourselves to hearing what God says, accepting it with prayer and praise,
asking for the grace of the Spirit so have fresh delight and joy in God.
