To meditate/pray upon
John 15:16 “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed
you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that
whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.”
Jesus has chosen us!
In the mystery of God’s electing grace, He chose you and me to be His.
But it doesn’t stop
there: He has chosen us to bear fruit. This is both promise and an alarm:
It’s a promise
in that if you are a Christian you will bear fruit for God! As we have seen,
all branches that are in the vine will bear fruit (15:1-2); they will bear many
kinds of fruit such as, faith and love for Christ, love for the church,
kindness, generosity, a desire to see others come to know salvation etc.
It’s an alarm
that is warning us that those who bear no fruit have not been chosen for
Christ!
Jesus is not
encouraging passivity or unhelpful condemning introspection; He is urging us to
embrace Him and press on to bear fruit for Him and for which we have been
appointed. As friends of Christ, we are to be confident and faithful in prayer. He
is ready to hear us as we seek to bear fruit for Him.
