Jesus defines the love we are to have for one another in the church as
laying our lives down for our friends. Would you see the church as a group of
friends? One can think of the church in many ways: a place to learn, a place to
grow in our relationship with God etc. but do we see it as a group of friends
who are going through life together?
The amazing thing is that Jesus has been such a friend to us – He has
died for us to save us, but He is also with us each day and in all
circumstances. He is a faithful friend who continues to do what is best for us
at all times.
Friendship toward God also entails that we obey Him – all friendship
requires that one endeavor to do what pleases the other. Always remember this
is not a friendship of equals; we are friends with God Almighty; He is our Lord
and friend!
We are not servants but friends. Jesus is teaching us about the
Christians’ new identity – we are friends with God. We can talk and walk with
Him every day in loving friendship. Let’s make it our very first priority to
express our love for our great friend and Saviour and to seek to walk with and please Him
each day.
To meditate/pray upon
John 15:13-14 “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s
life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I
command.”
James 2:23 ‘The scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham
believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,” and he was called
God’s friend.’
