‘For this reason, ever since I
heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all God’s people, I
have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. I
keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may
give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better’.
(Eph. 1:15-17)
Verse 17 ‘Spirit of… revelation’
Revelation (Apokalupsis- Apocalypse) means the unveiling of facts or truths about
God:
Things that were
previously hidden (veiled) becoming revealed to us about God, or ourselves in
relation to God.
Becoming
a Christian is an act of revelation by the Spirit: God invaded your life,
revealing your need and the truth of Jesus to you. What Paul writes in 1 Corinthians
2:14 is very helpful,
‘The
person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit
of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they
are discerned only through the Spirit.’
Having
become a Christian, it’s imperative that we keep growing in the knowledge of
God; and for this we have the Spirit’s ongoing ministry of revelation available to us.
We
need the Spirit to keep unveiling God as we read the bible, which is the
Spirit’s fullest revelation of God for us.
You
may want to pray something like this,
(With
the bible open in front of you) “Father, as I read your Word, I need and am
excited about what you will reveal to me by the Spirit. I pray for my brothers
and sisters and those who teach your word at Community Church, that they would
have the Spirit of revelation so that together we can grow in adoration and
faithfulness to you. Amen.”
