1. COME TO JESUS DAILY DEVOTIONAL
One of our goals as a church is to spend at least 20 minutes every day in prayer and worship out of the bible. I hope you find this devotional helpful toward that end.
This series, LIFT…
…is different to our usual practice for working through a book of the bible. I felt that, for this season, it would be refreshing to seek God for what He wants to say and to simply share that.
I trust that such an approach will help remind all of us to be prophetic - to listen to what God wants to say as a lifestyle.
These daily studies, likewise, are from my, and other church member’s devotions. I will also include devotionals derived from the various contributions that you share, as a church, in various settings.
Matt Beaney June 2019

MONDAY – BE LIFTED RECOGNISING THE TEMPTER
Genesis 3:1-3 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,  but God did say, “You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.”
Temptations are the devil’s enticements for us to sin. To sin is to do anything that is against God’s will. The devil hates God and has particular hatred for us who are ‘made in His image’ (Gen. 1:26-27). I’m sure that we are all guilty of not being as fully aware of the unseen spiritual realm, as we need to be.
Wayne Grudem has written,
‘However, if Scripture gives us a true account of the world as it really is, then we must take seriously its portrayal of intense demonic involvement in human society. Our failure to perceive that involvement with our five senses simply tells us that we have some deficiencies in our ability to understand the world, not that demons do not exist. In fact, there is no reason to think that there is any less demonic activity in the world today that there was at the time of the New Testament.’
RESPONSE
The accounts, such of Genesis 3, of demonic attack are included in the bible to teach us at least 2 things: Firstly, the world is as it is because we have listened, and continue to listen, to the devil. Secondly, the devil is real and attacks us to varying degrees of intensity. We will only be able to stand if we know he exists, trust God’s word, pray, and receive strengthening from our local church family.

TUESDAY – BE LIFTED BY KNOWING THE ENEMY
Genesis 3:4-5 “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
Today, we continue with our meditation on Genesis 3 and the Fall of Man. It is often said to soldiers, ‘know your enemy’. I understand that boxers, football teams etc. all study their opponents so as to understand and defeat them.
The devil, principally, attacks our thinking. He wants us to believe that God is a liar and, better yet, is a lie! The devil, subtly, slanders God to our hearts and, with great subtlety, we begin to slander God ourselves.
We begin to think, “Yes, God is wrong to say that…It’s wrong of God to control me like this…actually maybe what those teachers are saying, although contrary to scripture, seems very sensible…”
Jesus picks up the same theme when He says,
“You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” (John 8:44)
RESPONSE
How are your thinking and your conversations at the moment? Are you harbouring slander against God? Even more importantly, how is your personal relationship with God in prayer and worship? In the Garden of Eden account, a result of their sin was hiding from God. A sure sign of our falling into temptation is prayerlessness - we hide from God. We may keep up a formal Christian front, but the inner love for God is waning. Let’s go back to God in prayer and allow the reality of His presence to restore our souls.

WEDNESDAY – BE LIFTED FIGHTING LIKE JESUS PT.1
Matthew 4:1-4 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.  After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said if you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread”  Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
Jesus was not spared from this universal human experience of temptation. In fact, all three of the synoptic gospels detail the account when Jesus was tempted by the devil while he was in the wilderness. We will look at each temptation over the next three days.
Jesus was tempted to misuse His authority
Firstly, he was tempted “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread” (Matt. 4:3). Jesus had the power to turn stones into bread. At the wedding in Cana we see Jesus turn water into wine, so why would it be wrong, on this occasion, to do something similar with stone? It’s interesting that something that is right is not right on all occasions - the Christian life is not a matter of following formulas. Jesus is tempted to use His authority as Son of God to go against the will of God that He fast in the desert.  In 4:1 we read, ‘Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness’. It was the Father’s will, revealed by the Spirit, that Jesus fast. Not to do so would be an act of disobedience on this occasion.
RESPONSE
Jesus was the Son of God and as such we could presume that He had the right to use His authority and power in any way He desired. However, Jesus reveals to us that there is submission and authority within the Trinity. Likewise, we may be children of God, we may have authority to pray, but we must resist presumption, and seek to listen, Pray and act in accord with God’s will.

THURSDAY – BE LIFTED BY FIGHTING LIKE JESUS PT.2
Matthew 4:1-3, 5-7 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.  After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him…the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple.  “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written: ‘He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’ Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.”
Jesus tempted to put God to the test
Yesterday we saw how Jesus was tempted to misuse His authority. Today we see that He was tempted to test God. Satan misuses the bible; Psalm 91:11-12, quoted by Satan, is a promise of protection. It’s wonderful to know that God is protecting us and so we need never be fearful. The imagery in this psalm reminds one of Jesus’ great promise, ‘no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand.’ (John 10:28-29). The Christian is secure in this life and the next.
Such assurances over our lives, Satan will attempt to pervert, as he did with Jesus. Satan will attempt to use our assurance of salvation and God’s love to actually divide us from God as we presume His love and so no longer pray; we assume our salvation and so indulge in sin; we assume his protection and so become reckless…
RESPONSE
Jesus opposes temptation saying, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’ (Deut. 6:16) Like Jesus, we must answer temptation with truth properly applied. For example, how would Romans 6:1 refute Satan efforts to pervert the grace of God?

FRIDAY – BE LIFTED BY FIGHTING LIKE JESUS PT.3
Matthew 4:1-3, 8-10 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.  After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him…Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendour.  “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’”
Jesus tempted to by-pass the cross
Today we will consider the Last of the three temptations that Jesus experienced in the desert. Satan offers Jesus the kingdoms of the world in exchange for worship. The temptation of this moment has been used by countless films and books down the ages. The hero is offered his ambition if he will compromise with evil in some way. It’s so tantalising.  Satan is tempting Jesus. Satan is not completely clear on Jesus’ strategy for the restoration of fallen creation, but he knows that this is Jesus’ ambition. Satan knows, because he was there in the Garden, that if he can get Jesus, like Adam and Eve, to obey him, he will have won.
RESPONSE

After the Fall,  God promises, “And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” (Gen. 3:15) Here, in the wilderness, Satan is ‘striking’ Jesus, as he offers him a victory by avoiding the cross. However, Jesus knows that He will can only provide forgiveness for sins and restored worship to God through His suffering. Likewise, Satan is always tempting us into rebellion - He wants us to dishonour the cross and fall into sin in any way he can tempt us. Like Jesus, we ‘crush His head’ as we recognise the devil’s schemes and stand on the truth.

MONDAY - IT IS BETTER TO RECEIVE THEN (TO) GIVE
Acts 20:35 In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’
In Acts 20:35, the apostle Paul quotes the Lord Jesus by saying "it is better to give than receive". Of course, we look to serve as Jesus did and be generous with our time, money and attention. But the fuel for such a Christian life of self-sacrifice is to receive first from Jesus. It might be said that it is better to receive then (to) give
Receive first
The gospel is an announcement of good news that we hear (receive), a gift of eternal life that is given to us, an inheritance we didn't deserve, a new creation as God's children that took no effort on our part. We become Christians by receiving the gospel for the first time, and go on receiving through our lives.
The rest of the studies this week will help unpack some of what it means to receive first (and then to give out of what we receive) but a simple way to receive is to dwell each day on the gospel, in the Bible, and to pray. Another way is to ask for the Holy Spirit to fill you and guide you in everything you do each day, as the strength God provides (rather than your own strength).
RESPONSE
How are you doing at "receiving first"? Do you look to start each day remembering all that God has done for you, and then living in response to the truth of the gospel? Or do you find yourself trying to live your life for God by yourself?

TUESDAY – RECEIVE THE LOVE OF JESUS
Yesterday we saw that we need to receive if we are to give - we must receive all the good that comes to us through Jesus if we are to be able to live the life of love that God wants for us.
Receiving the love of Jesus is not just about knowing truths in themselves, but having the love of Christ penetrate our hearts. Thankfully, Jesus has promised us the Holy Spirit to teach us in the deepest part of our being. for example, Paul writes,
‘I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people…’ (Ephesians 1: 17-18)
Paul, not only taught the truth of God’s love, but he also prayed for the work of the Spirit - that He would teach things is a deep life-changing way.
RESPONSE
An empty well cannot refresh anyone! Likewise, if you are not receiving the love of God, by the Spirit, you will not be a giver.
I love the story of Zacchaeus who, on experiencing the love of Jesus, declared,
“Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.” (Luke 19:8)
Likewise, through the Spirit, we can now meet with the risen Jesus. Jesus, even now, can speak His grace over you. Those who seek to meet and walk with Jesus in such an intimate way will give out of what they receive!

WEDNESDAY – RECEIVING FREELY LEADS TO GIVING FREELY
Matthew 10:7-8 As you go, proclaim this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.
Through faith in Jesus, we enter the Kingdom of God - We are reconciled to God, He becomes our loving King and we have a great hope that the Kingdom is coming - Jesus is coming again to judge and restore all of creation. The command to  ‘heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse..drive out demons’ are signs in the present of what will happen on an international scale at Jesus’ return - amazing! Through the gospel, you and I have ‘freely received’ this great hope. Now, Jesus commands us, ‘Freely you have received; freely give.’
RESPONSE
Firstly, this means  to serve and share the gospel freely - not for financial gain. Jesus has freely given so much to us, the were bankrupt and disqualified. As we live in the light of such grace, we will be kept from giving for return. As James writes,
‘My brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ must not show favouritism. Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in filthy old clothes also comes in.  If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, “Here’s a good seat for you,” but say to the poor man, “You stand there” or “Sit on the floor by my feet,” have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? (James 2:1-4)
Secondly, only those who have received God’s grace will offer a free salvation to people - Salvation that is founded entirely on the cross of Jesus who died for us.

THURSDAY – LET’S KEEP RECEIVING
Colossians 2:6-7 So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.
Just this week I’ve been grieved by a prominent Christian leader who has declared that he in no longer a Christian. This is someone who once ‘received Christ Jesus as Lord’ but has failed to ‘continue in Him, rooted and built up…’. This week we have been meditating on the idea that we need to receive if we are to give. Anyone who falls away from Jesus reveals that they have failed to keep receiving from him.
Continue – We must continue to live in Him. Continue to renew our love and devotion to Jesus each day in prayer and worship.
Rooted – Like the person in Psalm 1, we are to daily put our roots into Jesus. Remembering His grace. Asking for help…
Built–up – Like any building, we will only stand if we are built on Jesus - continue to remember and build our lives on the gospel.
RESPONSE
We need to keep receiving fresh joy in the gospel. Life throws so much discouragement at us; the tide is constantly seeking to pull us away from the truths we have in Jesus.
Our text today ends by encouraging us to ‘overflow with thankfulness’. How are you doing at giving time to thanking God for the riches that you have in Jesus?
A sure way of strengthening your soul against the onslaught of the enemy is thankfulness. In light of what you have received, let’s give our praise and worship.

FRIDAY – VIEW GOD’S MERCY SO AS TO KEEP GIVING
Roman 12:1-2, 12-13 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will….Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.  Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.
Seeing God’s mercy - receiving His love afresh - gives us the pattern that our lives are to conform to. The world offers us many patterns to live by, but the gospel is the Christian’s mould. Put simply, Jesus’ death for sinners, is our manifesto. Receiving the love of God leads us to many things as we read in verses 12-13, but I want to particularly focus on generosity to our brothers and sisters who are in need, and hospitality. It’s only as we continue to receive the love of God, that we will be able to be generous in these two things.
RESPONSE
Let’s be Generous to the church
Generosity for those in need begins with the family of God (See 6:9-10; Acts 6:1-4; John 10:34-35). The way that we love one another is to be a light to the world around us. In light of Jesus’ mercy to you, how are you being generous in friendship, serving, giving…?
Let’s practice hospitality

Hospitality is the opening of our homes to others, particularly strangers. How are you doing in opening your life to others - particularly to those beyond your family and friends?

One of our goals as a church is to spend at least 20 minutes every day in prayer and worship out of the bible. I hope you find this devotional helpful toward that end.

MONDAY – BE LIFTED BY ENCOURAGING YOURSELF
BY JEM HOWE
Psalm 122:1 I was glad when they said to me, (I rejoiced with those who said to me- NIV), “Let us go to the house of the Lord!”.
Think back to your time at school - which teachers do you remember the most? I have very clear memories of two particular teachers; I dreaded one but enjoyed the lessons of the other.  What was the difference? One was incredibly discouraging, the other was extremely encouraging.
We all need encouragement; whether it’s at school, at work, at home… and all of us respond better to encouragement than criticism. And it is especially important that we are encouraged in our relationship with God.
Even Kings need encouragement. At the beginning of Psalm 122 we see how King David responded to the encouragement of others - he was glad and went with them to the temple to worship.
RESPONSE
How might you encourage others, specifically, in their relationship with God and His people?
To be such a person, firstly you need to encourage yourself. To be encouragers, we first need to be encouraged - only then will we be motivated to help others.
let’s learn to speak to ourselves with words of truth that encourage. Let’s stop confessing worry and fear, and start confessing who God is and the blessing we have from Him. Like David in Psalm 103,
Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits…’ (Psalm 103: 1-2)

TUESDAY – BE LIFTED BY ENCOURAGING OTHERS
BY JEM HOWE
Hebrews 10: 24-25 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another – and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
Yesterday we saw that if we are to encourage others, we need to be encouraged ourselves. Today, we see that God calls us to love others by encouraging them. The author tells us to ‘spur’ or ‘stir up’ our brothers and sisters. The word is ‘paroxusmos’ which contains the idea of provoking, and confrontation - like a ‘spur’ encouragement is sometimes to be lovingly firm! One of the key verses that has shaped our current vision is an example of Jesus encouraging people who were in spiritual need.
'Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” By this he meant the Spirit’  (John 7:37-39)
Jesus also ‘spurs’ the woman at the well onto greater things when He confronts her,
“Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again…” (John 4:13)
RESPONSE
Jesus has "living waters" for people. Surely this should move us to encourage them.  We don't want people to ‘meet together’ (be part of a Community Group, church…) because we say so! Rather, it’s because we know that it’s in these contexts we encourage one another in our relationship with Jesus. So, as the author of the Hebrews urges us, ‘let us consider how we may spur one another on’ or ‘take notice of how you can encourage others’.

WEDNESDAY – BE LIFTED TO ENCOURAGE NON-BELIEVERS
BY JEM HOWE
Psalm 122:8 For the sake of my family and friends, I will say, “Peace be within you.”
Colossians 4:5-6  Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.
Over the last couple of days, we see a divine pattern: those who are encouraged, encourage others to know Jesus. We see the same principle at work in a fire: each coal or log catches fire as it is put together with others and becomes a fire that will spread! As we are encouraged in church community, people around us will feel the ‘heat’ of our love for God in the way we live and speak.
RESPONSE
You and I are sent into our particular lives with a commission to share the good news of Jesus.  As we meet with our non-believing friends, listen to where they are at, and consider how you can offer hope and encouragement. But, I think it’s so important to highlight again, that it’s only as we are encouraged in Jesus that we will seek to bring others to Jesus. Personal evangelism (sharing the good news) comes out of a personal encounter! Let’s end by considering the following words by noticing that their ‘encouraging non-believers’ comes out of having ‘been with Jesus’.
‘Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realised that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.’ (Acts 4:12-13)

THURSDAY – BE LIFTED BY SEEKING TO PRAISE
BY NEV FLOYD
Psalm 22:26 ‘…those who seek him shall praise the LORD!…’ (ESV)
On Monday we saw the importance of encouraging our own hearts in God. However, there are days when I struggle to praise God. This verse is a helpful prompt. It reminds me to seek Him, and by doing so, it will lead me to praise Him. If I start my day seeking my own desires, thinking about my needs, looking at social media, before coming to Jesus, I can become distracted, and, often, discouraged.  However, if I begin by lifting my eyes to Jesus, reminding myself (through the Word) of who He is - my almighty & powerful Saviour - there is a promise that this will give me the desire to praise Him. To seek is an act of the will not the emotions. I don’t have to feel in the right mood to do this. Seeking is an act of faith – it knows that praising God is right, and it knows that if one seeks to praise, the desire to praise will be given. Jesus says,
“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” (Matt. 7:7)
If you seek to praise, the door of praise will open in your heart. The Psalmist knew this principle when he wrote,  “Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Saviour and my God.” (Psalm 43:5)
RESPONSE
Maybe you don’t feel like praising God. Never-the-less, right now, stop reading this, put away anything which may distract you, and take time to talk to Him and remind yourself of His greatness.
A helpful resource: ‘Praying the Promises: Anchor Your Life to Unshakable Hope’ - a book by Max Lucado (the short chapters in this book contain prayers full of the promises of God, which will likely lead you to want to praise Jesus.)

FRIDAY – BE LIFTED KNOWING GOD IS WATCHING
Psalm 33:18 But the eyes of the LORD are on those who fear him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love.
In this verse, we have a great summary of a Christian. A Christian in one ‘whose hope for s in His unfailing love’; they know that they have sinned against a holy God; they know what it is to fear Him - they have felt their condemnation and hopelessness. But they know that God has rescued them by His great mercy. His unfailing love has raised them from the depths of despair!
It’s of such people - those who hope in His unfailing love - that it is said, ‘the eyes of the LORD are on those…’ The Father’s eyes are on us. He is watching over us for good. We read more on this throughout the bible. Here are a couple of examples,
‘The Lord watches over you – the Lord is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all harm – he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.’ (Psalm 121:5-8)
‘For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him.’ (2 Chron. 16:9)
RESPONSE
If you are a Christian – if you have put your hope in the love of God in Christ, be encouraged knowing that you are precious to God.
We could summarise things as: if your eyes of faith are on God, His eyes are on you.

Today, lift your eyes of faith to God, being mindful of the truth that God is watching over you. He is protecting and guiding you. Encourage your heart by keeping this truth in mind today.
