3. Matthew 6:11: Jesus on money shows us our dependence

11:17 Posted by Matthew Beaney No comments
This is the third post that I will be undertaking over the next 2 weeks in which we will be looking at everything (pretty much!) Jesus said about money in the gospels. In order to do this I will be putting up two posts each day. This is coinciding with a 2-week preaching series that we going through at Community Church Putney- Jesus On Giving.

What do you do when you don’t have enough money? Maybe you cannot pay the rent, afford that new school uniform, go on holiday…

God definitely has the resources to make our lives comfortable, so why does He allow most of us to be financially challenged?

The Lord’s Prayer teaches us that we are weak and dependent upon our ‘Heavenly Father’ for everything in our lives. As part of this prayer we are to pray,

'Give us today our daily bread.’ (Matthew 6:11)

One needs to be constantly re-alligned; we are disposed to veer off from humility to having an inflated ego, independence and pride.

Our financial needs and limitations are a daily reminder of our dependence upon our Father for everything: for our basic needs right through to our salvation; for everything we are dependent upon our Heavenly Father!

This is why Jesus said, ‘blessed are the poor in Spirit’- those who truly see their weakness and dependence readily confess that they are sinners, in spiritual poverty, and Jesus died to save sinners like them!

Jesus teaches us to pray for financial needs; beyond being a reminder of our humanity, it is also a daily promise that God is a willing provider! So let's pray expectantly and regularly for our financial needs.

Take a moment to ask God to search you: Are you praying regularly and with expectation for your or another’s financial needs?
